UNRAVELING COMMUNAL CONFLICT IN SOUTH LAMPUNG

Abstract

Abstract: This paperwill try todissectthe dynamics ofcommunal conflicthappened inSouth Lampung. By looking at thebackground which is quitecomplex, in terms ofdifferences inrace,religion andsocial inequality, then there are someprominent questionsto ask. Why religious issue does not occur in the conflict of South Lampung which is involved two religious-ethnicity communities in two different villages? And toanswer andparsethis problem,this study use thetheory ofescalation brought byJeanD. PruittandRobin, as well as the theory ofethnicconflictproposed byAshutoshVarshney. The result is the communal violence occurred in South Lampung has local characteristic. However, it does not have a single cause but a slice of interrelated issues. The mainstream analysis putting the religion or the tribe as the root cause of communal violence in South Lampung is not entirely correct. Since in reality, either the factor of ethnic, politics, religion, or economy or even personal grudges has contributed to have the conflict of South get escalated. Abstrak: Artikel ini mencoba untuk menjelaskan dinamika konflik komunal yang terjadi di Lampung Selatan. Dengan melihat latar belakang yang kompleks, baik dari perbedaan ras, agama hingga faktor-faktor ketidakadilan sosial, muncul gejala yang berbeda dari beberapa konflik komunal lain di Indonesia. Yakni, mengapa isu agama tidak terjadi di konflik Lampung Selatan dimana konflik tersebut melibatkan dua anggota masyarakat yang tidak hanya berbeda etnis tetapi juga berbeda agama. Untuk menjawab pertanyaan tersebut, maka penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan teori sosial tentang eskalasi konflik oleh Jead D, Pruitt dan Robin serta teori konflik etnik oleh Ashutosh Varsney. Hasilnyaa adalah kekerasan komunal yang terjadi di Lampung memiliki lokal karakter yang unik. Analisis yang hanya menjelaskan bahwa perbedaan agama atau suku menjadi sumber konflik tidak lah benar seluruhnya. Pada kenyataannya, terdapat faktor lain seperti politik dan ekonomi atau bahkan persoalan personal telah berkontribusi dalam meningkatkan eskalasi konflik di Lampung Selatan.
