Abstract

The Consumer Empowerment Index in our country has not yet reached the target. The Ministry of Trade seeks to encourage product quality and competitiveness by increasing the Consumer Empowerment Index (CEI). This is in accordance with the theme of the 2019 National Consumer Day (Harkonas) "Time for Indonesian consumers to be empowered." This CEI is the basis for establishing a series of policies to improve consumer protection, educate consumers on their rights and obligations, and the ability to interact with the market. President Joko Widodo emphasized three important aspects that must be maintained by the Ministry of Trade, namely price stability and availability of basic commodities, increasing export performance, and building and revitalizing markets. Of the three mandates, there are two pillars that the Ministry of Trade must pay attention to in relation to consumer empowerment. Namely facilitating producers to grow and develop and empower consumers. For this reason, product quality in terms of health, safety, price, and size accuracy is a priority. So, this article elaborates on the role of the National Consumer Protection Agency (BPKN) in increasing consumer awareness in Indonesia.
